Frequently Asked Questions

How long will each treatment last?

The first appointment is for approximately 45-60minutes and follow-up appointments are 30 minutes.  This may vary depending on your circumstances.

What will happen when I arrive?

Your case history will be taken covering your presenting complaint and medical  history.  This facilitates a good understanding of your general health and helps to reach a diagnosis.  You will probably then be asked to undress (you may wish to bring a pair of shorts and/or a t-shirt) so that the osteopath can examine both your overall posture as well as the painful area.  You might also be asked to perform some simple movements.  Other areas that can contribute to your problem will also be examined e.g. if you have a neck problem your osteopath may want to examine your low back and overall posture as well as your neck.  Remember, the cause of your symptoms might be away from the painful area! However, YOU will be in overall charge of the consultation and can stop and ask questions at any time!

ALL YOUR DETAILS REMAIN STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL AND CANNOT BE RELEASED WITHOUT YOUR CONSENT.

Will there be any other tests?

Special tests such as blood pressure, respiratory exam, neurological exam etc may also be necessary to reach a diagnosis, and these will be performed by the osteopath.  If you require blood tests or X-rays, you will be referred to your GP or directly to the relevant practitioner (with your consent).

How many treatments will I need?

This will depend on your diagnosis/problem, your general health, your job/lifestyle and so on.  Some problems can improve with just one treatment whilst others may require longer-term maintenance to avoid relapse.

How can I pay for treatment? Does my health insurance company cover Osteopathy?

Payment is by cash or cheque only.

However all major insurers now cover the cost of osteopathic treatment.  Some will require a GP referral before commencing treatment, others may need you to call them first, and some will just be invoiced after treatment by the osteopath.  Please check your insurance policy beforehand, or call me for further advice.  It is your responsibility to ensure you have adequate cover.
